Leaf Installation part 1

Anyone who knows me well can tell you that I love to hang things from the ceiling. It’s something I have done since I was a young child, and frankly it’s just a part of our Family DNA because my Mom used to do the same thing. Birds of a feather right?! I got the itch last week to do something with all the beautiful fall leaves I was seeing on the ground, and I devised a plan to create a fall leaf hanging art installation. I wanted to post this in two parts, just in case anyone wants to make one as well. ┬áSo if you want to get started go out and collect a bunch of beautiful leaves, and press them in some heavy books. I used my art books and I have to say it filled my soul to glance through them again as I placed the leaves inside. Oh and along with collecting leaves hunt down a long lightweight ┬átree branch and set it out to dry. After your leaves are completely flat and dry, dip them in hot melted wax and air dry them before you set them down on a piece of paper. Angie gave me the wax idea and I have to say it totally makes the project! You can use any kind of clear wax, but I used bee’s wax. Below is a 2 second sketch of my idea, but please trust me when I say it will be more beautiful in person than this. I plan to suspend the branch with leaves from my ceiling above my headboard in my bedroom.

My next challenge is to figure out how to dip the bigger leaves in wax. My encaustic wax pot is small and now I am pondering buying some flat tin pans to heat over my griddle. Any other ideas? Part 2 of this post will include fastening the leaves to the stick, and installing the art in the ceiling. I truly hope you join me. I would love to see how you reinvent this idea or how you do it in your own home.

These look amazing! What about just a cheap cookie sheet on the griddle? Can’t wait to see part two!

Love the article!!!! I am excited to see the results! Can you sacrifice an old paint bush to paint wax on the larger leaves?

Ashley DeLatour - October 26, 2012 - 8:09 pm

I could totally paint the wax but the texture would be inconsistent which may not be a bad thing. Your comment did however inspire me to paint the branch some fun color which I had not previously thought of. I’m excited. I hope somebody else makes one too. I would love to see how someone else’s mind would create this.

I would totally do this if we had leaves here! I don’t think Palm leaves would have quite the same effect;)

I wish I could ship you leaves Lisa! You are right, palms just wouldn’t be same. I am jealous that you live around palm trees even though they wouldn’t work for this project. : )
