Encaustic workshop!

I’m so excited to announce that I will be teaching an encaustic workshop at my home in Bellingham on

June 14th 2014!

Many years ago I fell in love with Heather Gilson’s encaustic work over photos (mixed media, as she calls it). Her technique usually includes layered collage, and in my opinion, no one does it better. You can tell she has spent many years developing herself as an artist, and her art makes me weep it’s so beautiful.  In 2010 I was lucky enough to have attended a workshop she taught- and holy smokes was I in love. In my quest to find my own voice in this medium, I found that I gravitated toward a more simple aesthetic. I think my style as an artist has always leaned a bit toward understated and elegant, which I am completely comfortable with. I think this medium really lends itself to however you want to express yourself. I’ve been melting wax over photos for the last 3+ years and I could not be happier with the process or the outcomes. I love every part of it- the smell of the wood being sanded, beeswax melting, and the feeling of my heart beating as my image re-appears. Heather teaching me this process was a gift I now want to give others. I want you too, to fall in love with this ancient tactile art form.

I will be limiting the amount of people in the class so that I can give hands on help when needed. I will not be teaching pigment painting this round, but perhaps some day. : ) The workshop will go over a brief history of the art form, a demonstration of the technique I use, and offer plenty of time for everyone to play with wax, experiment with collaging, and walk away with a handful of art pieces.  The class fee will include the majority of the materials needed, however you will need to select some photos of your own to print and bring to class. If you are interested in attending the workshop I would start by looking through your photos and then imagine them covered in wax. If this fills a deep viseral void for you, then you have come to the right place. : ) If your heart is beating a little faster, please email me at ashleyluke555@gmail.com and I will send you more information along with details of the day.  EEEEK I’m so excited!
